The Top 10 Google SEO Team began with Kyle Carrington, originally living in B.C. Canada, now residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1996, Kyle, after having finished studying at B.C.I.T. began to get very interested in Internet Technology and "the web".

Initially, the world wide web was a place where most browsers could only visit via university computer terminals, in a text-only environment. This was commonly done with a program called LYNX. Regardless if the newer web pages had "pictures" or not, what you saw on LYNX, was whatever text, (and only the text...) the publisher provided. As web sites began to develop in a more graphical nature, many visitors literally could not see sites properly with LYNX, so it was replaced with Mozilla Netscape and Internet Explorer.

Kyle quickly learned that http://www.altavista.com (the defacto search engine of the time) could not see pictures either, and that it ranked it's results, based on what it could "read" - from real text. In the search for relevant documents, pictures did not effect search engines - only words on a web page, real text, could make or break a rank in the top placements of Altavista or Yahoo.

To this day, the theory still holds true. Google, MSN, Yahoo, Altavista - these search engines can only "read" pages, they cannot "see" pages, as we do. A website's relevancy to a given keyword phrase is only as strong as that site's usage of real text, both as keywords on their pages, and in backlinks to that site. LYNX is still used by SEO consultants to "read" a page as Google would.
